Effective water disinfection is about more than selecting a powerful disinfectant. Operators also need to consider how the chemical is stored, generated, dosed, monitored and maintained throughout the treatment process. For many water treatment applications, maintaining an adequate disinfectant residual is just as important as the initial disinfection step. The treatment approach must provide reliable microbial control while fitting the operating conditions, infrastructure and capabilities of the facility.
Two technologies that may be considered for water disinfection are chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) and stabilized chlorine tablets. Both can provide effective disinfection when properly selected and operated, but they have very different operational requirements.
• Chlorine dioxide is a powerful oxidizing disinfectant commonly produced on site from precursor chemicals. Because chlorine dioxide is relatively unstable, it generally needs to be generated close to the point of application. This approach can provide effective disinfection, but it also introduces additional equipment, chemical handling, process controls and monitoring requirements.
For drinking water applications, chlorine dioxide is also subject to regulatory requirements concerning its residual, as well as chlorite and chlorate formed during its use. EPA establishes a maximum residual disinfectant level of 0.8 mg/L for chlorine dioxide in drinking water.
• Stabilized chlorine tablets provide another approach to water disinfection. When dissolved, they release available chlorine that can be used to maintain a disinfectant residual in the treated water. Unlike systems that generate chlorine dioxide on site, tablet-based chlorination eliminates the need for an on-site chlorine dioxide generation process. Depending on the system design and application, tablets can simplify chemical storage, handling and dosing.
At this point, when evaluating a disinfection technology, the chemical itself is only part of the decision.
These considerations become particularly important in facilities where simplicity and reliable operation are priorities.

Where PROVITAB 3™ Can Provide an Operational Advantage
PROVITAB 3™ is an automated chlorination system designed to use PROVICHLOR TABLET™ for controlled water disinfection. The system is designed around a straightforward principle: deliver the required amount of chlorine to the water while keeping the dosing process controlled and consistent. This way, the system operates continuously to ensure a stable and precise residual level throughout distribution networks, keeping disinfectant present across the entire operation, helping to prevent biofilm formation and keeping the treated water free of contaminants.
With PROVITAB 3™, chlorine dosing can be regulated according to water flow using a flow meter and valve. An optional automatic dosing control configuration can also be used when the application requires additional control. This allows operators to move away from manually estimating chemical demand and toward a more controlled dosing process.
PROVICHLOR TABLET™ is supplied in tablet form, allowing the chemical to be handled without preparing chlorine dioxide on site. In addition, is a very effective disinfectant, preventing pathogens like Mycoplasma, E. coli, Aspergillus, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria or viruses.
Chlorine dioxide can work in broader pH range (typically 6.3 – 8.0). Although chlorine consumption can be slightly higher, PROVICHLOR TABLET™ is also effective in a pH range of 6.3 – 7.6. Moreover, a minimal formation of DBPs under the right operating conditions.
The cartridge-based format also helps minimize direct operator contact with the tablets. Cartridge replacement is designed to be a straightforward maintenance task, helping reduce routine handling requirements.
Advantages of using PROVICHLOR TABLET™
Less process equipment: A chlorine dioxide system may require equipment for chemical preparation or generation, along with instrumentation, monitoring and appropriate safety procedures. A tablet-based chlorination system can reduce the complexity associated with on-site disinfectant generation, making it particularly relevant for applications where installation simplicity and ease of operation are important considerations.
Residual control: Effective disinfection does not end when the water leaves the treatment point. Maintaining an appropriate disinfectant residual can be important throughout storage and distribution, depending on the application and applicable requirements. PROVITAB 3™ is designed to provide controlled chlorine dosing so that operators can manage the disinfectant addition according to system flow and treatment requirements. The actual target residual, dose and monitoring frequency should always be established according to the water quality, system design, applicable regulations and product instructions.
Applications Where Tablet-Based Chlorination Can Make Sense: The simplicity of a tablet-based dosing approach can be particularly useful in applications where chemical handling, maintenance and system complexity need to be minimized.
Potential applications include:
• Rural drinking water systems
• Remote water storage tanks
• Booster stations
• Well water treatment applications
• Cooling tower water disinfection
• Poultry and livestock operations
• Parks and recreational facilities
• Other remote or decentralized water systems
There is no single disinfection technology that is appropriate for every water system.
Chlorine dioxide can be a valuable option when its specific oxidation and disinfection characteristics justify the additional generation, monitoring and operational requirements.
For applications where controlled chlorine dosing, straightforward chemical handling and simplified operation are priorities, tablet-based chlorination can offer a practical alternative.
With PROVITAB 3™ and PROVICHLOR TABLET™, water treatment professionals have a tablet-based chlorination solution designed to simplify the way chlorine is introduced into the water while supporting consistent and controlled operation.
The goal is not simply to add chlorine. It is to make the disinfection process easier to control, monitor and maintain.
